A-Z Escape Vehicles

1996

The A-Z Escape Vehicles can be used to escape to an inner world, rather than traveling to a destination in the external world, “when you want to escape all you have to do is climb in and close the hatch.” Each unit is discretely anonymous on the outside, but the inside is completely customized to reflect the owner's idealized environment of escape. "As mass production creates increasingly standardized external conditions, we cater to our craving for creativity and personal control by turning inwards to our hidden private worlds."

Ten identical Escape Vehicles were fabricated by a camper company in Southern California. As each unit was purchased, the new owner commissioned his or her own ideal fantasy escape for the interior. Zittel’s personal Escape Vehicle was based on a childhood memory of the elaborate grotto built by the Bavarian King Ludwig. Andrea Rosen’s Escape Vehicle was a cross between Cinderella's carriage and a limousine. Dean Valentine had a complete Joseph Cornell work environment constructed with a desk, robe, and fans to carry out his cigar smoke.
