Quail Breeding Unit

1991

The Quail Breeding Unit was one of the first Management and Maintenance Units and was made to house Cortunix Quails, which are typically bred for the commercial production of quail eggs. This breed had the shortest incubation time of any bird bred for commercial production and the chicks are entirely independent as soon as they are born. With the Unit, Zittel explored how life is created both biologically and industrially. The Unit also references the archetypal natural history exhibition with a “scenic” backdrop of the desert landscape, an enclosed coop where the birds lay their eggs, and a panel for cataloging and archiving egg production.
