Sprawl 1 Litho Edition

2003

The drawings for Sprawl 1 Litho Edition are generated from aerial imagery that depict the fringe areas where wide-open desert meets large-scale urban development. Mirrored and repeated images are tiled to create an overarching pattern. Zittel chose to make prints that could tile because she was interested in exploiting the replicability of the printmaking process to amass a series of individual components into a larger whole. The sprawl pattern can be continued infinitely, just as one might imagine the suburban sprawl rapidly progressing as humanity takes over the natural landscape.
